Fine Large Chinese Taihu Scholar Limestone Rock

This fantastically shaped limestone is prized for its dramatic beauty of natural perforations and textured surfaces. The Taihu scholar rock is a naturally occurring limestone specimen and it comes from Lake Tai in South Eastern China. These are hard to find and harvesting them is now prohibited. Although formed by an interplay of earth, air, wind, water and fire, they are aesthetically pleasing pieces of art. However, it was not until the late Tang dynasty (618 - 907) that scholar’s rocks were collected in earnest.

The rock sculpture is elevated on a spectacular custom hand carved hardwood stand from the Qing dynasty.
